We’re calculating our carbon footprint.

The carbon footprint will be calculated this year as part of the ” Carbon Forests” project, covering scopes 1 and 2, according to the GHG Protocol, which is the most widely used standard for accounting for greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Scope 1 includes direct emissions from fuel combustion in stationary installations and vehicles owned by the organization. Scope 2 pertains to indirect emissions from the generation of electricity and heat supplied to the organization by an energy provider. The report will cover the year 2023. It is worth emphasizing that calculating the carbon footprint of our organization is a significant challenge, considering its specific nature and the inclusion of biogenic emissions in the calculations.

Data collection from the 473 LP units will be facilitated by a proprietary tool (the “Projects” application). This database aggregates and organizes information on various processes that produce greenhouse gas emissions, such as vehicle use, heating, and air conditioning.

The next step involves calculating the carbon footprint of products, enabling the State Forests to help their business partners achieve their own climate goals. Increasingly, our clients and stakeholders are seeking and expecting this type of information, driven by both growing social awareness and increasing requirements for non-financial reporting by businesses.

State Forests will thus join other entities in the European forestry sector that have determined their carbon footprint, such as Sveaskog in Sweden, the Lithuanian State Forest Enterprise, and Forestry England.
